What to Expect in Worship

Our worship is ancient, reverent, and accessible. We follow the liturgy of the Episcopal Church, using prayers and patterns of worship that Christians have prayed for generations, while connecting them to real life today.

A typical Sunday service (about 60 minutes) includes:

  • Opening music and prayers
  • Readings from the Bible (usually four passages)
  • A 10–12 minute sermon that connects Scripture to everyday life
  • Prayers for the church and the world
  • Holy Communion (also called Holy Eucharist, the Lord’s Supper, or the Mass)

You’ll see people standing, sitting, kneeling, bowing, or making the sign of the cross at different points. You are not expected to know what to do—just participate as you feel comfortable. Many visitors simply follow along with the bulletin and watch those around them.

Music
Our music is a mix of traditional hymns, organ, and other congregational songs. You’re welcome to sing along or simply listen and pray.

What About Communion?

The center of our Sunday worship is Holy Communion.

  • If you are baptized (in any Christian tradition), you are welcome to receive Communion at Trinity.
  • Baptized Children may receive at their parents’ discretion.
  • If you are not baptized or prefer not to receive, you’re still warmly invited to come forward, cross your arms over your chest, and receive a blessing.

If you’d like to talk about Baptism for yourself or a child, we would be honored to walk with you.

Kids & Families

We are glad to have children in worship—noise, wiggles, and all.

  • In the service: Children are welcome to stay with you for the whole service. We’d rather have a noisy church than an empty one.
  • Communion & blessings: Kids are welcome to receive Communion (if baptized) or a blessing at the rail.

If you have specific questions about kids’ programs, ask an usher or speak with the priest after the service.

What Should I Wear?

You’ll see everything from jeans and t-shirts to “Sunday best.”

Most people dress in a neat but casual way. Wear whatever helps you feel comfortable and present to God. You do not need special clothes to belong here.

How Long Is the Service?

Our Sunday service is usually about 60 minutes from start to finish.

After the service, many people stay to chat, meet newcomers, and enjoy informal fellowship. You’re welcome to slip out quietly if you need to, or to linger and get to know people.

Is Trinity Accessible?

We want Trinity to be as welcoming and accessible as possible. Our Sanctuary and Parish Hall are accessible with no stairs by entering through the door off our parking lot.

If you or someone in your family has mobility, sensory, or other accessibility needs, please contact us ahead of time (office@trinitymoundsville.org or 304-845-5982), and we will do everything we can to help you participate fully in worship and parish life.

I’m Not Episcopalian. Is This for Me?

Yes. Many of our members and guests come from different Christian traditions—or from no church background at all.

You do not need to know the responses, prayers, or when to stand and sit. We’ll provide a printed bulletin to guide you step-by-step, and you can simply join in as you are able. No one will look at you funny if you just sit and observe. There’s a common saying in The Episcopal Church…

All may, none must, some should.

What do we believe?

That’s easy. Our core beliefs are summed up in the Nicene Creed. This creed was written in the year 325 AD, so yeah it’s been around a while. It says the following:

We believe in one God,
    the Father, the Almighty,
    maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
    the only Son of God,
    eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
    true God from true God,
    begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
        he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
        and was made man.
    For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
            in accordance with the Scriptures;
        he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Book of Common Prayer, p 358

If you’d like to talk more about what we believe or how the Episcopal Church understands faith, Scripture, and sacraments, our priest would be glad to meet with you.
