Confirmation in The Episcopal Church is a pastoral and public moment when a person—often after a season of prayer, study, and reflection—makes an intentional, mature affirmation of the promises made at Baptism (either by themselves or on their behalf). In the rite, the bishop lays hands on each candidate and prays for the strengthening of the Holy Spirit, asking that they be equipped for a life of discipleship: to continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, persevere in resisting evil, proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ, seek and serve Christ in all people, and strive for justice and peace. Confirmation doesn’t “upgrade” Baptism; it builds on the grace already given, offering a meaningful way to claim the Christian life as one’s own and to take a deeper place in the Church’s mission.
